Structures
Since I started painting seriously, I haven’t been very enthused about realistic architectural subjects. But I somehow felt compelled to paint the three paintings in this series. I need to connect deeply with a subject before I attempt to draw it, and that’s what happened here. Now that I know what it feels like to convey a structure or a building that inspires me in some way, I know I’ll be doing more in the future.
Structures
Depuis que j’ai commencé à peindre sérieusement, je n’ai pas eu beaucoup d’enthousiasme pour les sujets architecturaux réalistes. Je ne sais pourquoi, je me suis sentie poussée à peindre les trois tableaux dans cette série. J’ai besoin de ressentir un rapport profond avec mon sujet avant d’entamer un dessin, et c’est ce qui est arrivé ici. Maintenant que je sais peindre une structure ou un bâtiment qui m’inspire d’une façon ou d’une autre, je sais que j’en ferai d’autres dans l’avenir.
Back to Nature. Pastel, 19” x 23”
This painting is based on a photo of an old hunting shack rotting away in the woods that my sister-in-law took in 2017. When I first started painting the shack, I thought it would be mostly in greys and whites. But to my amazement, the aging wood planks harboured a wealth of subtle colours that I only had to enhance slightly. Even as the old shack was about to crumble to the ground, it’s as if the “dead” lumber of the shack continued to live on and participate in nature’s boundless celebration of life.
Cette photo est inspirée d’une photo d’une vieille cabane de chasse prise par ma belle-sœur en 2017. Quand j’ai commencé à peindre la cabane, je supposais qu’elle serait pour la plupart en noir et en gris. Mais à ma surprise, les vieilles planches abritaient une profusion de couleurs subtiles que je n’avais qu’à rehausser un tout petit peu. Même si la vieille cabane est sur le point de s’écrouler, c’est comme si les planches « mortes » continuaient à vivre et à participer à la célébration sans borne de la vie qu’offre la nature.
Settling In. Pastel, 26” x 16”
This painting is based on a photo of the same rotting shack as in Back to Nature. I liked the sun shining through the pine tree, sending a warm light on the shack and overgrown grasses. I tried to capture this fading light and the calm acceptance of something moving on to another phase of life.
Ce tableau est inspiré d’une photo de la même cabane de chasse que dans Back to Nature. J’ai aimé les rayons du soleil qui s’infiltraient à travers les aiguilles d’un pin, ainsi que la lumière douce qui semblait réchauffer la cabane et les herbes sauvages. J’ai essayé de transmettre cette lumière affaiblie et la calme acceptation de quelque chose qui passe à une autre étape de la vie.
